Pruning the bush-vines

The Vineyard

In 2001 the rejuvenation of the winery started with the planting of 42 acres of clone 1127 Shiraz on trellis. Under the direction of Barry White, managing director, the new vines were set to produce modest crops of around 2 tonnes per acre with absolutely minimal watering. To prepare the ground and make the vineyard easier to manage, he removed thousands of tonnes of rock from the hilltop, lowering it by several metres. Spare limestone was used to form roadways, and unwanted rock used to fill a badly eroded creek line. Then he replaced the meagre layer of weathered red topsoil, and planted.

On the rockiest southerly-facing slope (all micaceous schist), he then planted five and a half acres of Mataro and two and a half of Grenache, pruned from the start as traditional untrellissed bush-vines.

Today the vineyard is in full production of about 80 -100 tonne with 2 vintages to be released in June 2006. See the wines section for updates of the new wines.
